Instagram Direct one-ups Snapchat with replay privacy controls

Instagram Direct one-ups Snapchat with replay privacy controls Messaging is the heart of Snapchat, so after cloning and augmenting Stories, Instagram is hoping to boost intimate usage of Direct with privacy controls not found elsewhere. Now when you send an ephemeral photo or video from the Instagram Direct camera, you can decide whether recipients can only view it once, replay it temporarily or see a permanent thumbnail of it in the chat log. Previously, all messages could be replayed temporarily but then would completely disappear. Snapchat always lets you temporarily replay a photo or video message, with no way for senders to deactivate the option. The replay controls could encourage Instagrammers to send more sensitive imagery by allowing them to prevent replays that can give people time to take a photo of their screen with another camera without triggering a screenshot alert to the sender. Whether it’s silly or sexy, some messages are only meant to be seen once. Meanwhil...

Google tries to make Android more enterprise-friendly with new recommendation program

Google tries to make Android more enterprise-friendly with new recommendation program With so many Android devices out there to choose from, it’s not always easy to find one that’s enterprise-friendly. To help alleviate that problem, Google announced the Android Enterprise Recommended program today. As the name implies, it’s designed to point enterprise IT departments at devices that Google has deemed to be enterprise-ready. This involves a number of criteria, including minimum hardware specifications for Android 7.0 + devices, support for bulk deployment and managed profiles and devices for a consistent application experience across deployed devices. The full list includes all of the minimum app and hardware specifications required to be included in the program. Photo: Google The program also requires that within 90 days of Google releasing them manufacturers make security updates available for at least three years. Ninety days feels a bit long if there is a serious vulne...

Robinhood rolls out zero-fee crypto trading as it hits 4M users

Robinhood rolls out zero-fee crypto trading as it hits 4M users Coinbase has some serious competition. Today, Robinhood starts rolling out its no-commission cryptocurrency trading feature in California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana and New Hampshire. Users there can buy and sell Bitcoin and Ethereum with no extra fees, and everyone can track those and 14 other coins in its sleek app. That’s compared to paying 1.5 to 4 percent fees in the U.S. on Coinbase. Users can sign up on the Robinhood Crypto site to waitlist for access. Robinhood has a chance to usurp Coinbase as the de facto crypto trading site app by vastly undercutting its fees. When people are buying thousands of dollars of cryptocurrencies at a time, Coinbase’s 1.5 to 4 percent fees in the U.S. can quickly add up. But Robinhood sees giving away the service for free as a powerful play to gain users for its existing service that lets people trade stocks, ETFs and options without additional charges. Its stylish, re...

Google says more than 40 carriers and device manufacturers now use its platform for RCS

Google says more than 40 carriers and device manufacturers now use its platform for RCS Rich Communication Services (RCS) is basically the standard for the next generation of text messaging, with apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, LINE and others now offering features that go far beyond the standard SMS-based messaging apps that tend to ship with your phone — unless, of course, you are an Apple and iMessage user. As Google announced today, more than 40 carriers and device manufacturers now use its RCS platform (out of a total of about 60 that currently support it). That’s up from the 27 Google cited last year. RCS is a GSM standard, but its biggest champion has long been Google, which looks at the service to allow its Android platform to get at least some feature parity with Apple’s iMessage service. With Mobile World Congress coming up next week, it’s no surprise that Google wants to talk a bit more about RCS ahead of the event. Specifically, the company today noted B...

Airbnb is rolling out a new tier aimed at higher-end travelers

Airbnb is rolling out a new tier aimed at higher-end travelers Airbnb today is rolling out a few new additions to their home-booking system, including new tiers that are aimed at higher-end customers, called Airbnb Plus and Beyond by Airbnb. The new Airbnb Plus tier has homes that are verified for “quality and comfort,” rolling out with around 2,000 homes to start that have been inspected against a thorough checklist. The luxury tier, called Beyond by Airbnb, is built around whole trips including hospitality, custom experience and — of course — higher-end homes. Each appears to be targeting verticals within the travel space that make sense based on the typical hospitality industry, but weren’t specifically singled out on Airbnb. Rather than just searching for a home on Airbnb and flipping through the photos or reviews, the new tiers may offer customers willing to spend more an opportunity to tap into the same expectations they’d get from a luxury resort — or, at least, a high...

Apple devices are butt dialing 911 from its refurbishing facility 2018

Apple devices are butt dialing 911 from its refurbishing facility 2018 Since October, emergency responders in Elk Grove and Sacramento County, California have received over 1,600 false alarm 911 calls coming from an Apple repair and refurbishing site in the area. It’s not clear if the calls are coming from Apple’s iPhones or Watches but each time a call originates out of the Elk Grove facility, there’s no one on the other end of the line and it’s gumming up the emergency response system in the area, draining resources and possibly slowing down response teams in actual emergencies. “The times when it’s greatly impacting us is when we have other emergencies happening and we may have a dispatcher on another 911 call that may have to put that call on hold to triage the incoming call,” police dispatcher Jamie Hudson told Sacramento CBS Local News, which first reported these incidents. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department says it has also received these false calls, telling...

Angry Birds maker craters on bad guidance 2018

Angry Birds maker craters on bad guidance 2018 Angry Birds maker Rovio’s stock price tanked cratered after their latest quarterly earnings report painted a dismal future for the game maker. The stock is down 50 percent after the company sent investors a warning in their latest earnings report that revenues were likely to suffer in 2018. Despite a strong over reliance on the Angry Birds brand, which seems to have been integrated into any and every licensing deal possible over the past few years, the 15-year-old Rovio is still making moves. The company had $365 million (297.2 million euros) in revenues in 2017, a 55 percent increase over the previous year as the game-maker made more money off of its titles and brand licensing deals. The strong reaction today was the result of investors feeling misled by the company’s optimism in past future guidance. Rovio, which is listed on Finland’s main stock exchange in Helsinki, forecast that its 2018 revenues would likely sink below th...

Jabra Elite 65t wireless earphones Review 2018

Jabra Elite 65t wireless earphones Review 2018 Nearly a year ago, we reviewed the Jabra Elite Sport, the longtime wireless audio maker's first venture into the true wireless space. You could say that they were ambitious with their approach, considering the earbuds attempted to appeal to both music and fitness enthusiasts. Unfortunately, it didn't help either that the Elite Sport were slapped with a $250 price tag, making them one of the more expensive mainstream options at the time. During CES 2018 early last month, Jabra introduced two new truly wireless headphones – the Jabra Elite 65t and the Elite Active 65t. Naturally, this strategy is a departure from the company's previous efforts, as it now tries to cater to the two opposing demographics with dedicated products. The Elite 65t, in particular, is marketed as "being engineered for the best true wireless calls and music experience." That's yet again a bold claim, so we'll find out how it stacks...
